And thank you to the Christmas Program Committee who gave direction. Because of three stages, you should worship the Baby of Christmas. Introduction It is certainly appropriate to give space to prophecies and promises since the story really began before the incident in Bethlehem. And it is just as appropriate to give space to the Lords second coming since the story does not end right after the incident in Bethlehem. I would like to focus with you for a few minutes on the coming of the magi. You do know, dont you, 1that they didnt actually appear at the manger? I know it is useful to have the angels, shepherds, magi, and animals there all together, but really the magi came sometime later when Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were living in a house. So we will separate them out for our purposes today. I should note that there are a number of valid lines of pursuit when contemplating Jesus birth, and this is only one of them. Stage #1--Prophecies Its exciting so see the miracle of a newborn baby, but what the magi did on that occasion was very unusual, one might even say, unique. They worshipped Him and gave Him royal gifts. I havent seen that happen with other babies, especially the worship. So why did they do it? The magi were operating on the basis of a prophecy given about fourteen hundred years before, as far as we can tell. It was the prophecy given by a somewhat mercenary prophet, Balaam, in Number 24:17, that a star would come out of Jacob. The wording itself suggests that the Baby would be royalty, and not just any royalty at that. As we recall the story, we remember that the magi had some difficulty finding the Baby because they thought this royal Baby would be born in the capital, in Jerusalem. When He was not there, the regilious scholars correctly discovered from Micah 5:2, a prophecy given about seven hundred years before, that He was to be born in Bethlehem Ephrata. So the magi proceeded to the little town a few miles south of Jerusalem, and there they found Him. Now the prophet Micah also said something beyond simply where the Baby would be born. He confirmed that the Baby would be a ruler and then added: His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity. For babies these days, we consider that their birth is the beginning. But for that Baby it was not the beginning, rather a change in status, and, one might say, in appearance, and, one might even add, in location. And the prophecy indicates that He had existed and been active since eternity past. Surely something beyond the ordinary. Another prophet lived during the time that Micah did, and he also promised this birth. In Isaiah 9:6 he wrote: a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us. Notice how specific the prophecy is. The text indicates that He already was a son, but being a child was new for Him. So it is technologically and absolutely correct that he said a child would be born while a son would be given. The terminology is fitting for a virgin-born Son whose Father is in heaven. The prophet was even more specific when a couple chapters earlier in 7:14 he announced that a sign would be given, namely, a son born of a virgin, and for virgin he used the word for a young woman, a word that in the Bible is always used for a virgin, a young woman who has not known a man intimately. But back in 9:6 the prophet Isaiah also added some titles for this unique Baby. Some of the titles are: Mighty God, and Eternal Father. Again, may I suggest the appropriateness of such a Baby whose Father is in heaven and whose mother is a virgin. This Baby is both God and man. This is why the magi worshipped Him. The future at that point was looking very good! God sending His own Son into the world as a ruler. We[d like that, wouldnt we? Well, actually, many wouldnt. Stage #2--Experience on Earth But did the story develop like it should? Fast forward about twenty-five or thirty years. Where is He now? What is He doing now? I dont see His political stock rising. Instead of hobnobbing with the whos who of His time, He was spending His time in little villages usually near the Sea of Galilee and is followed by a ragtag group of men of doubtful backgrounds. Kind of acting like a rabbi even though He had little of accepted conventional education to teach them. Maybe the prophecies were wrong. Maybe all that promise never really developed. There have been some like that. You know the program, Where Are They Now?sometimes its better not to know. He did attract some crowds for a time, but then His popularity faded. He kept clashing with the politically correct group, and eventually they stirred up the people to have Him crucified. For what? The governor Pilate was not sure. It seemed to be an issue of His identity. His identity was always a point of interest, wasnt it? if not a point of contention. But that is why the magi worshipped Him after a very long journey at great expense and risk. They worshipped Him, because even as a babe in arms, they knew His real identity. So He died. End of story. Well, in most normal cases that would be the end of the story, but, as we have seen, very little about this Baby was normal. There is a verse that many of us know, but, as in so many cases, we havent paid much attention to why it is where it is. The verse is Hebrews 9:27 which goes like this: And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment. Its a good witnessing verse to help someone think seriously about life and death issues. But its only part of a sentence, and it is really where it is in order to explain something about Jesus. The rest of the sentence is this: so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. So, guess what! This was not the end of the story. Just like death is not the end of the story for us but judgment comes after, so it is with Jesus. Well, it is again a little different. He died, and afterward is the judgment, but He will Himself be doing the judging. The judgment for believers will be the glorious fulfilment of their faith in Him, their fully realized salvation. The judgment for unbelievers will be their consignment to eternal suffering. If there ever was a case when you should know the Judge ahead of time, it is here. It seems to me we have gone far afield. We were discussing earlier about a Baby born as a ruler. He didnt rule; instead He died, and now we are talking about judgment. Yes, that the way it unfolds. And this too was in the prophecies. In fact, you can start in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3 where it was promised that the seed of the woman (an excellent description of someone virgin-born) would crush the head of Satan and win the age-long battle being fought every day here on earth now between God and Satan in the hearts and homes of us all. The prophecy spoken by God Himself was later supplemented by the prophecies of Isaiah in 7:14 where he promised a virgin-born Baby who would be God with us. It also agrees with the long prophecy in Isaiah 53 in which this Unique Individual would suffer and be the sacrifice for the sins of the people. We can no way make our way to God since we became sinners in Eden by violating the only rule God gave there, but as soon as we did sin, God announced that He would make His way to us. His Son would be the sacrifice in our place so that we could be reunited with God, if we would have it. We said earlier that this Baby was both God and man. It had to be this way, you know. In Adam we all sinned back in the garden, we forfeited the treasures of the garden of God when we said No to fellowship with Him. You want that fellowship back again? Im sorry, but we as sinners are not in a good position to retrieve it. In fact, it is impossible for us to retrieve it. So God in His great love, since we could not reach up to Him, promised on the very day that Adam sinned that He would reach down to us. The theological word for this is incarnation. God and human flesh coming together in one. God taking the initiative to wear human flesh, to experience all we do, even the worst of it, and then to pay the infinite price of our sin for us. Thats why the magi worshipped this Baby. So, no. The way His life turned out was not a mistake, not great promise gone wrong. It too was the fulfilment of prophecy. But what about all those promises of ruling? Stage #3--Second Coming Our verse in Hebrews 9 says that He shall appear a second time. Old and New Testament alike expect His second coming and His ruling here on earth. Even the earth itself is waiting for His second coming; Romans 8 testifies to its environmental groaning. But I must warn you. How you relate to Him with reference to His first coming determines how He will relate to you at His second. Our verse in Hebrews says when He returns He comes to judge. Whom will He judge? Those who have not recognized and accepted Him as the sacrifice for sin, as the One who reached down so that we can be restored to fellowship with God. Make no mistake about it: 2 Thessalonians 1 says that He will come, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. It will be a fearsome time, and it will then be too late. On the other hand 2 Thessalonians 1 says also to belie^vers that He is coming to give relief to you who are afflicted. So we eagerly anticipate the day when He returns to judge. This time there will be no doubt about His identity as all will see and admit that He is the KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And He will judge, and all the prophecies will be finally fulfilled. And all will then bow the knee in recognition of who He is, regardless their eternal destiny. Revelation 21 promises that those who worship this Baby who came to be Gods reaching to us by way of sacrifice for our sins will receive an inheritance unparalleled. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be among them, and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be an*y death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. And He who sits on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new. And He said, Write, for these words are faithful and true. And He said to me, It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
